Children are society's most vulnerable and need to be protected

The month of October is recognized as Child Abuse and Neglect Prevention Month in the province of Ontario. On September 27th, 2013, in partnership with the Ottawa 67’s, the Children’s Aid Society of Ottawa (CASO) kicked off their annual awareness campaign. Prior to the game, city Councillor Tim Tierney presented a proclamation declaring October as Child Abuse and Neglect Prevention month in Ottawa and both he and CASO's Executive Director, Barbara MacKinnon, participated in the ceremonial puck drop.

This year’s theme brings awareness to the importance of knowing the signs of abuse and neglect.  Keeping kids safe is a community responsibility, we are all obligated to report suspicions of abuse or neglect and it’s important that the general public feels comfortable when doing so. With an increased focus on working with families earlier, in the vast majority of cases, children are able to remain at home while CASO works with families to strengthen their parenting capacity and create a more stable future for their children.

CASO encourages parents to talk about this awareness with their children and invites the community to get involved.

United against child abuse. Wear purple on October 18th and help break the silence.
